Magulmahya Vihara

Magul Maha Vihara is situated at Lahugala in the Panama Divisional Secretariat Division in Ampare District. This monastery which was once known as Ruhunu Maha Vihara is supposed to have been built by King Dhatusena (                 ). In the fourteenth Century it had been renovated by Queen Vihara Maha Devi the consort of both King Bhuvanekabahu IV (             ) and King Parakramabahu V (            ).  Two rock inscriptions is said to have been installed by Queen Vihara Maha Devi. A Bodhi Tree shrine, an Image Jouse, a Dagoba, and a Chapter House have been built in an area encircled by a wall of huge granite panels. Outside the wall the remains of a Vatadage, and an Asanaghara are found.
