Mission

The Department of Archaeological Survey of Sri Lanka is the apex regulatory body in Sri Lanka for the management of its archaeological heritage as defined by the Antiquities Ordinance.

 

Objectives and Functions

  1. Discover by exploration and excavation objects, inscriptions, managements and sites of historical and Cultural Value and record such funding.
   
  2. Conserve ancient monuments and other Cultural Property.
  3. Display in an acceptable and secure manner ancient monuments and other cultural property.
   
  4. Conduct research in to ancient monuments and other cultural property and to publish the findings.
   
  5. Implementation of rules and regulations of the Antiquities Ordinance
     
 
Major Functions of the Department
  1. The regular maintains and security of the Antiquities in site Museums, Archaeological Reserves and Protected Monuments.
2. Exploration of ancient sites and the administration of the Antiquities ordinance and documentation of ancient archaeological sites, movable and immovable Archaeological Property.
3. The excavation of ancient sites and conduct of research into material Culture of the historical and pre-historic periods.
4. Conservation of ancient buildings following accepted archaeological methods and layout of ancient monuments and environs.
 
5. Research relating to inscriptions, their translation and publication.
6. Conservation of wall paintings and sculptures and other movable archaeological materials.
7. Establishment and maintenance of site museums which provide research facilities.
 
The general work programme for the ensuring financial year include
 
  1. Providing services to visitors at archaeological sites and museums.
  2. Expeditions publication of the research material of the Department.
  3. Extension of archaeological services to areas which hitherto have not been adequately served.
